If I could have a dog, and got a dog, I suppose I'd have to get a bigger bed. Dogs are reasonable animals and like to take their part of the bed right in the middle, where it's comfortable. They hog the covers, too.

But at least then there'd be something warm and friendly keeping me company at night when I wake up in some kind of sick and sweaty disoriented existential panic. At least there'd be some company without pleading, without feeling it was another imposition, another favor granted reluctantly, to humor me and keep me quiet.

Maybe I just have some kind of ingrained emotional need for rejection, to make me feel that the world is unchanged and working normally.
